What are practising privileges as a private GP?

In order to start practicing privately at an existing healthcare facility, you will need practicing privileges. Having practice privileges as a private GP is similar to being on the ‘providers list’ within the NHS.

Do I need practicing privileges?

Practicing privileges are mandatory if you are looking to work as a private GP in a practice. They will be defined by the organisation and will be looking for evidence of your qualifications and training, as well as ensuring that you stay up to date with immunisations and best practice.  

When a private practice is inspected by the CQC, it is answerable for all the doctors which work at the practice. The practice needs to be confident that you will represent the clinic well and provide a high level of care and professionalism to patients.

How do I get practicing privileges?

To gain practicing privileges you will need to be approved by the organisation you are wishing to work with and must be on the GMC register.
