Whether you join the IDF or not is a personal decision as it is not a formal requirement to do so. It is worth considering joining, especially if you are just setting up your private practice due to the level of peer support and shared information they can provide.
There are several benefits of becoming a member of the IDF as a private general practitioner. These include:
The Independent Doctors Federation is a nationwide organisation which aims to support the community of independent GPs and specialists to help them to deliver outstanding clinical care in the private sector.
They strive to promote excellence within the medical sector and give benefits and support to members.
The IDF has a community of over 1300 members which makes it a great resource for those starting out in private general practice to connect with others in the field and share advice, support and solve problems.
The IDF can help with CQC inspections and runs an appraisal scheme which is highly regarded by the GMC. Members are bound by the IDF member handbook and are governed by its articles of association so it is a good idea to read these before deciding if you would like to become a member.
