As a private GP, can I use the NHS electronic prescribing service (EPS)?

No, not as it currently stands. To use EPS, your practice would require a ‘Y code’, and these are not available to non-NHS practices.

How can I prescribe electronically as a private GP?

A number of vendors are now delivering various types of ‘electronic’ prescribing to the private sector. These include the likes of Signature Rx, Pharmacierge and CloudRx.

Pharmacierge and CloudRx both offer a dispatch solution, where they will send drugs to patients next-day or same day. SignatureRx offers a similar solution, or patients can retrieve the drugs from their local pharmacy.

Can you use private EPS systems through your note taking software?

For EMIS users: through Hero Health's floating toolbar (integrated with EMIS), you can issue a private script via SMS or Email, which a patient can redeem from any mainstream national pharmacy. The integration will retrieve the medication details from EMIS Web, and share these with the patient via a solution called SignatureRx.

Benefits of private electronic prescribing

Easy for patients to access medications

Helpful for digital consultations (where dispensing is complex)

Creates a secure paper trail (no ‘double dipping’)

Flags when medication has been dispensed

Can private EPS be used for controlled drugs?

Typically they can’t.
