Can I use NHS mail as a private GP?

Yes, NHS mail is available to all CQC-registered care providers in England who have achieved Approaching Standards on the Data Security and Protection Toolkit.

Is NHS mail secure?

NHSmail is a secure email service which means that data can be sent safely and securely to other email addresses which meet the same high standards of accreditation. NHSmail also allows users to securely exchange information with insecure or non-accredited email services via the NHSmail encryption feature.

How do I send sensitive information if I am not using NHS mail?

The guidance from NHS Digital is that you must never send confidential information to or from an email address which does not meet the necessary standards of security, without a form of encryption (E.g., Egress).

What is Egress?

Egress is a paid-for encryption service that enables you to send a secure email to any email recipient. If the recipient is an NHS address, then it will be unencrypted automatically on receipt, as all NHS mail addresses are setup to handle Egress securely
