Yes, with the patient’s consent, it is possible to access the patient’s NHS record.
There are multiple ways to access a patient’s NHS record:
From Nov 2022, all NHS practices are mandated to make patient records available online, with only limited exceptions. This means any NHS patient can access their record via the NHS app or other app (e.g., Patient Access). If the patient accessses their record on their device, and shares this with you in person, this record view will give you near full access to their record including consultations, medications and pathology.
EMIS is integrated with GP Connect, through which you can access an HTML version of a patient’s record. This is a relatively comprehensive record, that is audited for access.
Around 70% of all patient records are now accessible via Accurx’s record view solution. Practice's have to manually enable this feature, but once in place, any practitioner with an NHS email address can request to view a patient’s record, and the patient can grant access with a 2-factor code. Note this will require the patient to be present (virtually or in person), and to have contact details saved on their NHS file.
“We’ve really invested in trying to collaborate with local NHS GP services, as patient’s increasingly use us as an ‘overflow’ service. This means we try and access a patient’s record to review recent NHS interactions, and we share our notes back with the NHS GP post-consultation, so they can pickup where we left off. This has helped align us, and improved overall patient satisfaction.”
