There are a range of differences between a private GP consultation and an NHS consultation which may influence a patient's choice. The main difference is the time you will have with the patient, with typical private GP consultations lasting around 30 minutes.
There are a few key differences between private and NHS GP consultations that you need to be aware of when considering how you would like to practice.
Private GPs often choose to have longer appointment times for their consultations. This usually means that more can be done in one visit and patients feel as though they have had more time to explain or to ask questions.
At the moment it is difficult to get access to the patients NHS GP record though this is possible, so you may need to spend time ensuring that you have all the background information that you need.
Patients prefer to see the same doctor and this option is more likely to be open to them within the private sector. It is worth considering this when you are deciding how much availablity you would like to set - patients who have seen you once are likely to want to come back.
During a private GP consultation GPs will often take blood or dipstick urine themselves and even record ECGs if needed. In NHS GP appointments further tests usually require a separate appointments.
