Do I need a health and safety poster in my private GP practice?

Yes, you do need a health and safety poster. It is a requirement of the CQC and you will get a black mark from the CQC if they can’t see one on display when they inspect your practice.

What is included on a health and safety poster?

The HSE health and safety law poster covers the following:

Contents

The reason for the health and safety law

What employers must do to keep employees safe

What employees must do to keep themselves safe

What to do if there is a problem

Information on fire safety and employment rights

You may wish to expand on the HSE health and safety poster, adding specific health and safety considerations for private general practice (rules and information related to healthcare health and safety).

Why do I need a health and safety poster?

The health and safety poster lets employees know what they and their employers need to do to keep themselves safe in the workplace.

It is law that if you employee anyone you must display the health and safety poster or provide each worker with a copy of the leaflet.

One of the key CQC inspection questions is ‘are they safe’. This is looking at if you service is safe not only for your patients but also for your staff.

What's it like

"As a health and safety poster is required by law, it is really important to get one in your practice as soon as you employ a member of staff. Make sure it is somewhere that staff can see it and it is visible to the CQC when they come to inspect you."

Where can I get a health and safety poster?

The Health and Safety Executive website has a range of posters and leaflets which you can purchase and download to use in your practice.

The posters come in A2 or A3 size and can be purchased from their website and will be sent to you in the post. The leaflets are available as a free download and should be given to each member of staff.
