Do I need additional/different indemnity to practice as a private GP?

As a private GP, you will need to speak to your insurers before you begin doing any private work to make sure that your policy is amended to cover you and any additional services you will be providing.

Ensuring appropriate cover

When starting out as a private GP you need to make sure your indemnity fully covers your services so you remain compliant. When it comes to indemnity cover there are some clear steps you need to take.

Do

Decide on the services you will be offering to ensure you have cover for them all

Decide if you will be operating as a sole trader, an employee or as part of an LLP

Speak to your insurers and make sure you are fully covered before beginning any private work

Don't

Start practicing privately without speaking to your insurers

Assume you will be covered without checking

What is indemnity?

Indemnity insurance provides protection and security against any losses or legal liabilities which may arise during your private practice.

The GMC clearly states that you must make sure you have adequate indemnity insurance, and it is a legal requirement for all practitioners registered with UK healthcare regulators to have an indemnity arrangement that gives appropriate cover for their type of practice.

What's it like

“Making sure you have the correct indemnity insurance is vital before you start any private work. It gives me peace of mind knowing that I am covered if anything goes wrong and have access to support and advice when I need.”

What cover do I need?

As private GPs work outside NHS settings and can offer services which are restricted by the NHS primary care contract, you will need different or additional indemnity even if you are also working for the NHS alongside your private work.

If you are setting up your own private practice, where you will be employing other GPs you will need to decide if they will be covered by the indemnity policy for the practice or if they will need to arrange their own.
