How much do private GPs charge?

The cost of seeing a private GP can range from around £30 to £200 per consultation. There are many factors that determine the price point of a private GP consultation and you will need to consider what you are offering within your consultation to determine the price point.

Reasons for different prices

There will be reasons why private GPs charge different prices for consultations such as cost of rent or business rates which vary according to where they are situated. Transparency about costs is essential as laid out by the GMC.

Reasons for price differences include:

Price considerations

Length of consultation

In person or virtual consultation

Premises location and cost

Scope of services within the consultation

Low-cost private GPs

Low-cost private GP services can be found for as little as £30 per consultation. They are typically be conducted telephone or video call or based in pharmacies or other lower-cost settings.

Lower cost private GPs will normally offer a limited range of services and will direct patients back to the NHS GP for any complex care. Consultations are likely to be around 10-15 minutes long.

High end private GPs

Premium private GPs can charge around £200 per consultation. These consultations usually last longer and are often conducted in person in state-of-the-art facilities in towns or cities.

These GP services generally manage a wider range of problems.

Care will be personalised, and patients are likely to be able to see the same clinician.

What's it like

“Private GPs offer consultations at a range of price points. It is important to understand what is being offered within that consultation to be able to compare the prices of different private GPs.”

Mid-range private GPs

Between these two price points, there will be a range of private GP services offering services at a range of prices. The price point of private GP services will typically reflect the type of service the practice is aiming to deliver.

Additional costs

In addition to consultation fees, private GPs will also charge for investigations (e.g., patholog/ blood tests) and tests (e.g., ECGs).

Patients should also expect to pay for any clinician’s time spent on administrative or other matters relating to the patient outside the allocated appointment (e.g., filling in a report after the consult window has ended).
