The most used GP record system in the UK is EMIS Web. EMIS is used by over 55% of GPs nationally.
EMIS is designed to meet the requirements of NHS GPs. Benefitting from substantial and ongoing investment at a national scale means that along with Systm1 (not available for private providers), EMIS is the most robust, feature-rich and compliant GP record system.
The foundation of any private GP service should be clinical care delivered at (or above) the standard of the NHS – and this requires a bedrock record system such as EMIS.
EMIS has a broad partner program of integrated 3rd party products. One of these, Hero Health, is a patient engagement platform built to meet the needs of private providers.
Hero enables you to seamlessly raise invoices, collect payment (via Card or Direct Debit), and pass these through to your accounting system (Xero). It also offers online booking, and a suite of communication tools, including SMS and Egress for referrals, and private EPS.
There is a long list of private sector focused electronic record systems. Whilst these are cheaper than EMIS and Hero, and have the benefit of being fully integrated as one system, they fall a long way short of the standard NHS systems from a clinical safety perspective.
Many private GPs settle for substandard systems that lack even basic functionality such as clinical coding (SNOMED) or full pathology integrations. The more advanced private sector systems include these features, but ultimately fall substantially short of EMIS.
Often we hear stories of private GPs setting up on cheap private sector record systems to reduce cost, but then having to go through painful and expensive migrations to safe and robust systems like EMIS a few years into their practice's life.
